Web Mapping with Vector Tiles!

When: Wednesday, November 1, 2017, 6:00–8:00 PM
Where: Galvanize, 111 S Jackson St, Seattle, WA

https://www.meetup.com/maptimesea/events/243953615/

Intro:

In this workshop, we will introduce the concept of vector tiles. We'll be looking at generating our own vector tiles with Tippecanoe (https://github.com/mapbox/tippecanoe) (utility tool), styling vector tiles with Maputnik (http://editor.openmaptiles.org/#10.75/47.6140/-122.3843) (vector tile style editor), serving vector tiles using Tileserver-gl (https://github.com/klokantech/tileserver-gl) (one of many vector tile servers), and creating web maps using the Mapbox-gl-js (https://www.mapbox.com/mapbox-gl-js/api/) tool. Then, we'll have a hands-on exercise on bringing vector tiles into Maputnik to stylize and create a web map as well as Mapbox Studio workflow.

What to bring:

Be sure to bring your laptop. Please come with Firefox browser installed otherwise you won't able to run the demo. Also please register for a GitHub account (https://help.github.com/articles/signing-up-for-a-new-github-account/) (if you don't have one already).

Target Audience:

Anyone interested in learning about vector tiles! This is a more advanced topic, so we'll assume some prior GIS and web mapping knowledge. We'll be discussing various vector tile workflows in order to provide a broad overview of vector tiles use in web maps.

Where to go:

We will be meeting at Galvanize. When you arrive, let the person at the desk know that you're there for Maptime and they'll point you in the right direction.

About your instructor:

Peter Keum is a senior GIS Specialist with the King County Wastewater Treatment Division.
